Cost guide

Business Insurance Cost Research Hub

Premium only makes sense when the coverage request and business facts are the same.

Why business insurance costs vary

Insurers price exposure. Industry, operations, state, payroll, revenue, property, vehicles, limits, deductibles, claims history, contracts, and underwriting appetite can all change a quote.

The cheapest quote may not be equivalent

A lower price can reflect lower limits, a higher retention, narrower operations, different property values, missing endorsements, or a different policy package.

  • Compare the same operation description.
  • Compare the same limits and deductibles.
  • Compare the same property, vehicle, payroll and revenue inputs.
  • Compare forms and endorsements, not just the premium line.

Use averages only as context

Published medians or averages from insurers and marketplaces can be useful reference points, but they describe a particular customer sample and should not be treated as a quote for another business.

Sources and verification

Use official and primary sources to verify current rules, insurer licensing, policy wording, and state requirements. The declarations page, forms, endorsements, and signed contracts control the actual insurance relationship.
